Thrills and Chills: Trespass, The Ghost Orchid

This week's reading was 100% escapist. Ahhhhh! If you are in need of a little transporting, I can heartily recommend the following reads:

Trespass, Rose Tremain, W.W. Norton & Company, 2010
The simple charm and natural beauty of the South-of-France countryside are deceiving in this deftly written thriller, for just below the surface, anger and resentment brew. In this novel, Rose Tremain explores the concept of "trespass" in its many facets: territorial, physical, emotional, and psychological. The trespasses the already-tormented characters (two sets of siblings, and a lover) commit against each other lead to building tension over property, affections and self-determination, ultimately resulting in a terrible crime, and then healing. (Reader caution, can be graphic.)

For:  Suspense/Thriller Fans

In Case You Missed It:

The Ghost Orchid, Carol Goodman, original hardcover from Ballantine, 2006, paperback (as linked, Arrow Books)
In The Ghost Orchid, contemporary writers seeking inspiration and incubation at a writer's colony in upstate New York are drawn by discontented spirits into the mystery of an unresolved, century-old crime. As they unveil its secrets, they discover their own connections to the original participants and find personal resolution of their own. The setting itself is enchanting: an Adirondack area mansion with elaborate gardens, secret passageways, and a supernatural presence. The Ghost Orchid is a well-crafted, complicated ghost story that will draw you in and give you shivers.

  1. I like the US cover for Trespass better than the UK one - this draws you in and has more than a hint of menace...

  2. I had to pop back over to you and peek at the UK cover - I agree! Interesting. I always wonder what they think the differences are in our national characters that they choose different artwork!
