My best funk-busters are the things that shake me up, take me out of the familiar, and stretch or challenge my mind, body and spirit in some way - I'm finally starting to get back into my modest yoga "practice" (if you can even call it that) - but what a difference. Getting in some non-review writing has been a huge help: we've been running Flash Fiction Challenges over at LitStack.com, and even that very little bit of creative exploration every few weeks does wonders for breaking through the gunk in my head. Also ... don't laugh ... we've been watching a lot of Netflix, in particular, The United States of Tara. While the story is good, I'm most blown away considering Toni Collette acting in this complicated role, bringing such depth and nuance to Tara and each of her alters, and contemplating the process of bringing the written words of such a challenging script to life in a very physical way.
I've also finally made my way to starting some of the fabulous (and, as it turns out, funk-busting reads) that I've been looking forward to in my TBR. Each of these three are so different from other books I've read recently, and from each other. I'm dipping into each of them in turns, a little bit at a time, and absolutely enjoying the exciting variety of language, writing styles, stories and approaches.
1. Kristine Ong Muslim's We Bury the Landscape (forthcoming from Queen's Ferry Press) is a collection of stories inspired by works of art, and I'm loving alternating the reading with googling and studying the images of the paintings. Muslim's stories are tiny but chock full of imagination, imagery and whimsy, and each captures something lovely and perhaps previously unnoticed about each painting.
2. J.A. Pak has described her latest novella So Easy to Love as "chick lit," but ladies, if this is chick lit, it is chick lit for smart chicks. I've only just started, but so far, So Easy to Love is romantic, sharp, observant, and completely enjoyable. I'm also loving how the author is weaving classic movies into the story.
3. After reading and absolutely loving How They Were Found last year, I've been eagerly awaiting Matt Bell's collection Cataclysm Baby (forthcoming from Mudluscious Press). Again, I've only just begun to delve, but as expected, these are taut, superbly written, surprising, and very intense little stories. My only regret is having been too eager and requesting an advance review copy, rather than waiting to buy the final version... because who wouldn't want to have this amazing cover in his/her hands?

I know what you mean about getting into a funk with your blog when real life is so busy and energy supplies can be low. I find walking is a good funk-buster, baking and rereading a favourite book.
ReplyDeleteThanks, Sam. So agree, those are wonderful ways to refresh and re-energize!
DeleteI always like to go to a new restaurant to chase away the funk, especially one specializing in a food I've never had before, like pambazo (which I had for the first time this week). Thanks so much for your wonderful review of So Easy To Love! I guess I do bank a great deal on the intelligence of my readers! Look forward to reading the other books.
ReplyDeleteExcellent, yes, new flavors! (*frantically googling pambazo*) Am so enjoying the book, just what I needed right now!
DeleteSounds like I'm in line with others - I like to go on walks and exercise to try and free my mind up a little. I'm also a huge, huge fan (perhaps too much of a fan...) of watching TV shows when I feel I'm in a reading or writing funk. The problem being that there are just so many good shows for me to watch...
ReplyDeleteI've had Muslim's collection on my desktop for a couple weeks now. I'm glad to hear you're enjoying it so much - I'll be pushing it a little higher on my TBR list!
So glad not to be alone in believing in the power of tv! :D
DeleteReading We Bury the Landscape has turned into a virtual gallery walk of sorts, so enjoying considering the art hand-in-hand with the stories - Look forward to hearing your thoughts on the collection!
Yoga and walking are good - I find that taking photographs makes me look with fresh eyes, and then cropping and editing them into instant creativity, does it for me.
ReplyDeleteLove thinking of photography as a way of seeing differently - perfect!
DeleteBy the way, I was in Barnes & Noble today & saw The Lantern right out there on the table! Hope all is going well with the new project :D!
You and I are both. I was in a serious funk the last two weeks, after a long trip I don't like to do anything. I get really funked up. Hehe and can't do nothing but lay around. But I think I'm back in my groove now. So Easy to Love looks delightful and I really like the cover. Glad you were able to find some books to get you back in the groove as well.
ReplyDeleteHi, Lena! nice to have company :D. Sometimes you just need to wait it out! Glad it's better.
DeleteWhen I'm in a funk I try to think of something different to do, or something nice for myself, or just wake up and decide to put one foot in front of the other. As the song says, soon you're walking across the floor :-)
ReplyDeleteSo true - a whole lot of wisdom in that little ditty!
