Spark, and Interview with Courtney Elizabeth Mauk







It was my great pleasure to read Spark, a mesmerizing debut novel from Courtney Elizabeth Mauk and the ever-excellent Engine Books. The author very kindly answered my questions about the inspiration for her story, her writing process, her favorite things about Brooklyn, and much more. In other very essential news...thanks to a very generous gift certificate (from a very generous gift-giver!), I indulged in a bookish shopping spree at Powell's - newly arrived in my mailbox: recently released NW by Zadie Smith and Beautiful Ruins by Jess Walter, as well as a few older ones I've been meaning to get to for a while -  Marcy Dermansky's Bad Marie, and Patrick Somerville's The Cradle. Can't wait to get started!

    I'd forgotten all about the posts on Bad Marie, I suppose it shows how fast the blogging world moves when so much reading is done. Enjoy your books! I'm looking forward to Vanity Fair, having spent several months deciding whether or not to read it now and concluding that I must.

      (should add I read Beautiful Ruins already- terrific novel... makes you want to hop on a little boat to a fishing village in Italy)

    I'm looking forward to your thoughts on The Cradle. I have Fobbit waiting for me at the library...I will let you know how I find it.
