(Almost) Thirty Photos in (Almost) Thirty Days

I don't know about you all, but a brand new year not only gives me that wonderful clean slate/blank calendar page/the world is your oyster feeling - it also makes me crave the new and the different. So I was excited to learn about the wonderful Thirty Photos in Thirty Days project over at Chris Galvin's blog. Chris was inspired by a few friends who are painting Thirty Paintings in Thirty Days; and she's invited folks to play along, exploring their month in whatever medium - photos, flash fiction, poetry, etc - works for them. It's just the creativity jumpstart I needed, so although it isn't strictly bookish... and although I'm starting a little late... (hence the "almost.") and probably won't post everyday (one more "almost") .... here goes.

We recently moved to the south, and our family has been participating in a children's program at a local community garden. We've had wonderful gardening weather right up through now, though it is finally getting just a bit too cold for the plants - this week and next will probably be the last of our efforts. As the growing season wanes, the gardeners have been clearing their plots of dying and diminished plants, and their removal has given us a new landscape - with it, a fresh eye for the cycles of the garden and for some of the details that were less visible when plants were flourishing.

Today I noticed this beautiful statue (in another gardener's plot) for the very first time... my daughter believes he might be Saint Christopher, who helped a baby safely across a river only to later discover the baby was Jesus in disguise. I don't know if this is Saint Christopher, or even if this is the true story of Saint Christopher. It is frankly all hearsay. But I love the idea that there just might be a bit of holy hidden in all us seemingly average Joes, and I love that my daughter told me the story. So whether this is Saint Christopher or not, it's nice to have him looking out for us and the plants, and reminding us to look for what is good in each other.
